The resistance to change

It is commonly known that people become complacent with what they are used to and are most often resistant to changes. This includes the medical establishment especially when it come to radical changes. New ideas are often shunned even though they may be more beneficial to the patient. As an example one hundred years ago the medical establishment brutally mocked the first doctor Dr. Lister - who advised surgeons to wash their hands before operating on patients. Additionally Dr. Papanicolaous devised the Pap test for uterine cancer. He published for fifteen years before anyone would listen to him. Now the American Cancer society extols the virtues of the test that he invented.

Or take a pioneer in biochemistry, Denham Harman, M.D. now a retired professor of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Based on exhaustive, in-depth research, Dr. Harman, several decades ago, discovered and announced that free radicals harm, reprogram and even kill body cells, contributing to degeneration, cardiovascular disease and cancer as well as contributing to premature aging. Initially the research establishment laughed at him and his theory. Thousands of studies later, Harman's free radical theory is a reality. 5 He is the father of anti-oxidents, a genius who knew that he was right and he persued his theory until it was proven to be fact. It took Dr. Harman over ten years to do this.

There are a number of brilliant medical doctors who are coming up with significant discoveries related to cancer but their voices will not easily be heard. We do not lack the wisdom to cure cancer, rather we lack the wisdom to cure the system that cripples progress. Additionally as has been proven so many times in the past, "The present is the enemy of the future", reluctant to any changes, most medical doctors will simple treat diseases in the manner in which they were schooled, not looking for modification or improvements. The same old recipes for cures that do not work well will be used again and again, but let some innovative researcher come up with a new theory and the establishment will beat him down until he performs at the same level of mediocrity as the rest. What I will bring to you is some of these theories so you can evaluate them for yourself and you be the judge rather than one who has a vested interest in the past.
