          Cancer Statistics

Lets look at some of the staggering statistics regarding cancer. You will be shocked to see that the incidence of this disease has been on an increase over the past 50 years. The sad truth is that the national Cancer Institute spends less than 10 percent of its entire budget on prevention studies. Even so, there have been some pretty impressive results from research focused on the lifestyles and diet of other cultures. 3

Despite improved survival rates over the past 30 years, the number of cases of breast cancer has risen dramatically. In 1960, your lifetime risk of getting this disease was 1 in 20; today, it's 1 in 8. 3

The table below, from NCI statistics, shows the five-year survival rates for the major types of cancer. There's even a variance in your chances depending on whether you're male or female, black or white. The first figure is the survival rate for blacks and the second for whites.
